Daisy Hill FC has announced the appointment of the former hiker Nicky Hunt as the new first team manager.

He replaces Lee Hill, who left the club at the beginning of this week.

In a 20-year career that stretched over 20 years, Hunt is probably best remembered for the 10-year magic in Bolton, where he made 126 appearances and also won 10 U21 upper limits in England.

As soon as his career ended as a player, he moved to the coach and had roles at Ashton United and Warrington Rylands before he came to Atherton Collieries, where he was an assistant to Michael Clegg.

Hunt said about his appointment: “I have now trained for three or four years at a non-league level at the Northern Premier League and I really enjoyed it as a deputy manager of Clegg (Michael Cleg), whose now at Atherton Colls.

“But I just thought it was time for myself to take this step, and this opportunity came very quickly.

“From the moment I met with Aaron (Hunt, Daisy Hill Chairman), I knew that it was something I wanted to do and why we can go into the remaining 28 league games this season this season.

“I came here to watch the team as a child, so I have a belonging to this football club.

“Back then it was a family club and it is probably even a family club.

“The fans, the committee members and everyone who are involved in the club simply love it to a point where it is their lives, which is for football in terms of football.

“I put everything in when I’m into the coaching or the game side.

“I can only see the way the club is managing the new sponsoring sponsorship in one direction.

“I will have at least one if not two of my new coaching teams with me, so I will have a good team behind me, the level knows and you know what it takes to win games.

“This league is a hard league, but everyone could beat someone that day, and we definitely have no chance of reaching the play-offs.

“We had a slow start, but there are only six games in and 28.

The chairman of Daisy Hill, Aaron Hunt, added: “Everyone in the club is very much looking forward to working with Nicky.

“He is a local boy who had a brilliant career as a player on the top level.
