David Mitchell and Robert Webb have been back with their first new sketch show. It is a comedy SmorgasBord that is as random as funny, and will feel like a wonderful relapse for fans of your 00S series who look mite chell and webb. And this time you brought some friends with you, with guest appearances on Mitchell and Webb, the Kiell Smith-Bynoe from Ghosts and Podcaster and TaskMaster Star Stevie Martin. We met with the couple to talk about Gogglebox, the two Ronnies Downton Abbey and Snooker.
A recurring joke on the show is that the younger comedians introduce you Think you are a few old ones. Are sketch shows a young person’s game?
Webb: Well, hopefully we will not prove that they are.
Mitchell: The two Ronnies were pretty old. But people seemed older in the past than now, so it could turn out that Ronnie Barker was in the last series of the two Ronnies 36.
Webb: With the greatest respect, David, they finally dress their age because they have dressed in a student like a 50-year-old man.
Why have you thought the sketch shows have been in short supply in recent years??
Mitchell: They always came to TV fashion and gone. Now many sketches pass online, so that the thirst is saturated with random YouTube material to a certain extent after the genre. That could be part of the reason. People say it is because they are expensive. I don’t think they really are. It is definitely cheaper to make gogglebox as a sketch show, but it is probably cheaper to make a sketch show than Downton Abbey.
Webb: I am a little cheaper than Maggie Smith at the beginning.
David and his wife, Victoria Core MitchellWas on Celebrity Gogglebox. Were you disappointed, Robert that David didn’t choose her as his partner?
Webb: I was neither disappointed nor surprised because I didn’t live with David. In fact, Mitchell and Webb do not help according to Gogglebox, so you may look at it on Gogglebox. I don’t expect Mary and Giles to do it. But if the Siddiquis doesn’t like it, I will be pretty annoyed.
What is the idea of involving other comedians this time?
Mitchell: It is important to have people who are represented in the comedy under 50. We were younger comedians who came through on Channel 4. So it felt like a good way to make a show, in getting some younger comedians through.
Do when you have written a fan favorite sketch, how “are we the bad guys?” Or Numberwang? Or is it surprising?
Webb: We are not Tony Blair. We don’t think about the legacy. Sometimes you have the feeling of getting something and has to write it down immediately. Other ideas, you go: we will just leave it live in the notebook for a while. But you cannot predict what the audience will decide. You can only give you what you think is good, then sit back and wait for funny results.
How is it to work together again? If you can say that you love each otherThat would be practical, so we have a good quote.
Webb: Well, we’ll do it, so continue.
Mitchell: We were the best men at the weddings of the other. Of course we love each other, but it is also not what people tend to say to each other and be English.
Webb: They knew that we would let each other, but they got it out of us. My best man was easier. It was more difficult for David because it was at the end of a very busy year. I really wondered if he would be able to say something nice about me. But he did it.
How long did you choose whether it was webb and Mitchell or Mitchell and Webb?
Webb: I was in the first round ko. I think David just muttered something about the alphabet and I somehow took it.
Mitchell: I mean, I used the alphabet as the reason.
Webb: I could have used – if I had the joke, which I demonstrably did not – this one syllable in front of two syllables.
If you hadn’t become a comedy Double Act, What else could Would you like to have become?
Mitchell: How about Mappin & Webb, the jewelers? I am not interested in building a separate business in which I get the second billing. I don’t just have to stop being a comedian and becoming something that I don’t want to do, like a lawyer, a real estate agent or a silversmith, I also have to play the second violin.
Webb: And I have to continue to be “and webb”. You can only imagine how much I am not in it.
